Question

Which signal gets disrupted in spinal cord injury?

Open in App
Solution

Spinal cord injury:

  1. The spinal cord originates from the medulla oblongata of the brainstem to the lumbar portion of the vertebral column.
  2. It is characterized as a long, thin, tubular structure consisting of neural tissue.
  3. The fundamental role of the spinal cord is the transmission of nerve impulses from the motor cortex to the body and from the afferent fibers of sensory neurons to the sensory brain.
  4. It serves as a hub for coordinating a variety of reflexes and has reflex arcs that can individually control reflexes.
  5. In the event of a spinal cord injury, the signals which are coming from neurons, as well as the signals which are going towards receptors, will get affected as both of these signals are combined into a single bundle.
