The first trophic level is composed of a large number of individuals i.e. producers that are capable of producing their own food by trapping the energy of the sun.
The trophic stage of an organism refers to its position in the food chain. The first trophic stage, also recognized as the ecosystem’s base, has the highest concentration of energy, that is passed to species at different trophic levels. The producers and consumers in the ecosystem can be arranged into different feeding groups and are known as trophic level or the feeding level. The energy flows from one organism to another in the ecosystem.
Levels of an ecosystem
Different levels of ecosystems are,
Plants and other autotrophs are known as producers. They prepare their own food using sunlight and carbon dioxide by the process of photosynthesis. This energy is transferred to the organisms that feed on the producers.
This is the second trophic level which includes all the herbivores. Animals such as cows, buffaloes, deer, few insects cannot prepare their food and rely on plants and natural products for nutrition.
A few organisms such as rats, foxes, fish belong to the third trophic level. These are secondary consumers and derive their nutrition from the primary consumers.
This is the fourth trophic level that includes all the carnivores and omnivores.
This is the final trophic level of the ecosystem. The animals belonging to this trophic level have no predators of their own. Eagles, lions, anacondas, belong to this trophic level.
