Question

Which waves are used in sonar to find the depth of a sea state?

Solution

SONAR:

  1. Sonic waves are used in SONAR (sound). Sonar often employs noises with barely audible frequencies towards the human ear.
  2. Sonar employs a wide spectrum of frequencies. Long-range detection but also deep water bottom sounds employ very low frequencies.
  3. Medium frequencies are developed to determine targets. Precise positioning and industry sonar systems such as fish finders employ ultrasonic frequencies.

Properties of ultrasonic waves:

  1. Whenever they travel through the medium, they have a heating effect.
  2. They are reflected, refracted, and collected by the substrate in the same way as regular sound waves are.
  3. They operate as catalytic agents, speeding up chemical processes.
  4. While moving through the fluid, they generate a stationary wave pattern.

Therefore, ultrasonic waves are used in ‘SONAR’ to find the depth of a sea.
