Who coined the term "Species"? Carolus Linnaeus or John Ray?

John Ray is credited with coining the phrase Species. He was a well-known naturalist in England. He was one of the first to try to give the concept of species a biological definition.
Previously, the term species was used to refer to any type of life. It was a common Latin word with no special meaning in natural history. When the debate over whether there are one or several species began, it became critical to determine the true meaning of the term species. Then John Ray explained what that meant.
