Solution
American scientist, Benjamin Franklin discovered that clouds are electrically charged.
Kite experiment
During a thunderstorm, Franklin flew a kite made up of a large silk handkerchief, a hemp string, and a silk string, a metallic wire was also attached to attract lightning.
A hemp string would conduct electricity in wet conditions and silk thread wouldn't. The hemp string was attached to a metal key.
While conducting the experiment Franklin experienced an electric shock when he touched that key.
This is because negative charges were collected in the metal piece as a result of lightning, these charges attracted positive changes in his body when he touched the key.
Thus he demonstrated that clouds are electrically charged and lightning is an electric discharge.
