Kite experiment

1. During a thunderstorm, Franklin flew a kite made up of a large silk handkerchief, a hemp string, and a silk string, a metallic wire was also attached to attract lightning.
2. A hemp string would conduct electricity in wet conditions and silk thread wouldn't. The hemp string was attached to a metal key.
3. While conducting the experiment Franklin experienced an electric shock when he touched that key.
4. This is because negative charges were collected in the metal piece as a result of lightning, these charges attracted positive changes in his body when he touched the key.
5. Thus he demonstrated that clouds are electrically charged and lightning is an electric discharge.
