Psychology is the study of the human mind and its manifestations. A psychologist will focus on understanding how the human mind functions in a given social set up.
Father of Psychology
Wilhelm Maximilian Wundt (1832–1920) is known to posterity as the father of psychology. He is the founder of the first psychology laboratory where he exerted enormous influence on the development of psychology as a discipline, especially in the United States. This laboratory became a centre for those with a serious interest in psychology, first for German philosophers and psychology students, then for American and British students as well. All consequent psychological laboratories were closely modelled in their early years on the Wundt model.
The branches of Psychology are as follows:
- Clinical Psychology
- Cognitive Psychology
- Developmental Psychology
- Health Psychology
- Evolutionary Psychology
Psychology uses scientific methods to study the human mind. This involves formulating a hypothesis testing that results in a logical conclusion backed by physical data. Psychologists will be employed in diagnosing and treating mental health and also double up as counsellors who give advice on different issues.
