Solution

Answer:

To elect its President, Mexico held elections every six years since its independence in 1930. Mexico never came under the rule of a dictator or military. The cause of concern was that the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) always won the elections till 2000, although opposition parties contested in the elections. PRI managed to achieve this not due to the work done but due to the various dirty tricks used by them which are mentioned in the below.

  • In the campaign for its candidates, PRI spent large amounts of money.
  • The people found it difficult to vote, as the polling booths were deliberately changed at the last minute.
  • The activities of opposition parties were largely ignored by the media.
  • The media only criticized the opposition parties.
  • Parents were forced to vote for the PRI by the teachers in the Government schools.
  • All those who were employed in government offices had to attend its party meetings.
