Northern Plains are in India are the most recent landforms. These are formed by the alluvial deposits laid down by the rivers such as the Indus, the Ganga, the Brahmaputra and their tributaries. Therefore, fertile land is provided by the river. Thus, more people reside in the northern plains. Let us know more about these plains.

Features of Northern plains

It is a densely populated physiographic division. As per the survey, the population may be around 400 million. Numerous people live in the Northern plains because of the following reasons:

  • The northern plain is the largest plain covering many rivers that are running from the Himalayan mountains.
  • The plains are flat and in level.
  • Fertile land is available for cultivation.
  • The plains are formed by the deposits brought by different rivers such as Brahmaputra, Indus, Ganga, and their tributaries.
  • With a rich soil cover equipped with an adequate water supply and favourable climate, it is agriculturally a productive part of India.
