Question

Why do amphibians and reptiles have three-chambered hearts?

Solution

Amphibians:

  1. Amphibians are ectothermic tetrapod vertebrates in the class Amphibia .
  2. They live in a variety of environments.
  3. Reptiles are tetrapod animals that include all vertebrates.
  4. They protect their embryos in a series of sacs.

Three chambered hearts in amphibians and reptiles:

  1. A heart with three chambers is designed for amphibians, who can absorb oxygen through their skin.
  2. With the exception of crocodiles, which have a four-chambered heart, all reptiles have a three-chambered heart with two atria and one ventricle.
  3. The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood.
  4. This blood is also known as spent blood, as it returns from the body tissues.
  5. Blood is then directed to the ventricle before being pumped to the lungs.
  6. After the lungs absorb oxygen and expel carbon dioxide, blood returns to the heart.
  7. Then it empties into the left atrium.
  8. The blood is then pumped out of the body after entering the ventricle for the second time.
  9. This time the heart maintains high blood pressure and rapid blood flow as the blood is pumped to the tissues.
  10. It is allowing the blood to deliver oxygen more efficiently.
  11. The three-chambered heart is an adaptation of these organisms in the circulatory system.
