Why does a gun recoil when a bullet is fired?

Open in App
Solution

Newton's Third Law of motion:

  1. According to Newton's Third Law of motion, every action has an equal and opposite reaction
  2. When a gun fires a bullet, the gun puts a force on the bullet that propels it forward.
  3. The bullet likewise exerts an equal and opposing force on the gun in the backward direction.

Therefore, when a bullet is fired from a gun, it recoils.
