Why Does An Athlete Breathe Faster?

The human body needs energy regardless of its current state. Energy is produced when we breathe in oxygen. An activity such as running requires much more energy than walking. But the normal, shallow breathing, the human body cannot bring in the required levels of oxygen required to prolong the intensive activity. Hence, athletes or any individual doing an intensive activity will breathe in faster, allowing more oxygen for the production of energy.
