Question

Why does our palm feel cold when acetone or petrol is put?

Solution

Nature of acetone/petrol:

  • Acetone, petrol, as well as perfume, are volatile. They evaporate quickly when exposed to bigger surfaces.
  • During the process of evaporation, it losses energy. And to recompensate, the loss of energy, energy is gained by the liquid particles from the palms that make the hand cool.
  • Acetone, petrol, and perfume absorb our palm's latent heat of vaporization. The palm of the hand loses heat and becomes frigid.
