Question

Why does the resistance of a conductor increase with an increase in temperature?

Open in App
Solution

Resistance:

Resistance is a measure of the opposition to current flow in an electrical circuit.

Explanation:

  1. As the temperature of the conductor rises, the velocity of the free-charged particles increases. And the increased temperature also affects the amplitude of vibration due to this the vibration rate of metallic atoms also increases.
  2. The free charge particles that carry the charge collide with the atoms more frequently as they try to go through the metal. And this phenomenon causes some extra resistance in the path of free electrons.
  3. Hence, the resistance increase with the increase in temperature.
