Importance of haemoglobin:

  1. Haemoglobin is found in red blood cells.
  2. It serves the function of transporting oxygen in the blood.
  3. Haemoglobin has the ability to bind to oxygen and gaseous nitric oxide.
  4. This binding is critical in the transport of oxygen.
  5. Haemoglobin contains seventy per cent of the iron in the body.
  6. When there is a low concentration of iron in the body, haemoglobin fills the void.
  7. It is why it is referred to as the most important respiratory pigment.
  8. Haemoglobin is responsible for the shape of RBCs.
  9. RBCs resemble doughnuts, but with a thin centre instead of a hole.
  10. Haemoglobin binds to and transports oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues.
  11. It also transports carbon dioxide back to the lungs from tissues.
