Question

Why is respiration considered an exothermic reaction? Explain

Open in App
Solution

Respiration is an exothermic reaction:-

  • Respiration is a special type of burning of fuel.
  • This process basically involves the burning of sugar with oxygen within the cells of every living organism.
  • This produces the energy which is needed for all the reactions of our life along with water and Carbon dioxide as waste products.
  • When the carbohydrates present in the food are broken down into glucose, this glucose come in contact with oxygen and combustion occurs.
  • This produces Carbon dioxide, water, and heat.

C6H12O6(aq)Glucose+6O2(g)Oxygen6CO2(g)Carbondioxide+6H2O(l)Water+energy

  • An exothermic reaction is a reaction where there is a release of heat(energy).
  • Thus in this respiration process heat is produced, and hence we can say that respiration is an exothermic reaction.
