Question

Will current flow more easily through a thick wire or a thin wire of the same material, when connected to the same source? Why?

Solution

Current

  1. It is the rate of flow of charges.

In which wire the current will flow easily.

  1. Current will flow easily through the thick wire.

Why will current easily flow through thick wire.

  1. According to Ohm's law, the resistance of the wire is inversely proportional to the cross-sectional area of the wire.
  2. The thick wire will have a larger diameter than the thin wire so its cross-sectional area will be larger than the thin wire.
  3. So the resistance of the thick wire will be lesser than the thin wire.
  4. The lesser the resistance of a wire, the more easily the current will pass through it.
