Solution

Osmosis:

  1. The net movement of solvent molecules through a semipermeable membrane from a region of lower solute concentration to higher solute concentration.
  2. Solvents including gases and supercritical liquids undergo osmosis.
  3. Passive process (energy is not used).

Types of osmosis:

i) Endosmosis:

  1. In a hypotonic solution, the solvent molecules move inside the cell.
  2. Cell turns Turgid and de-plasmolyzed.

ii) Exosmosis:

  1. In a hypertonic solution, the solvent molecules move outside the cell.
  2. Cell turns flaccid and plasmolyzed.
