Solution

Active ingredient in alcoholic drinks:

  • Ethanol is an active ingredient that is used in alcoholic drinks.
  • Ethanol is alcohol with a chemical formula C2H5OH.
  • It is also named ethyl alcohol.

Uses of ethanol:

  • Ethanol is used in nail paint removers, polishes, and in many cosmetic items.
  • It is used in the manufacturing of many drugs as well as hand sanitizers.

Reaction of ethanol with sodium metal:

  • When sodium metalNa reacts with ethanol C2H5OH, it produces sodium ethanoateC2H5ONa and hydrogen gasH2 is liberated.
  • The chemical reaction can be depicted as:

Na(s)+C2H5OH(l)C2H5ONa(aq)+H2(g)

Reaction of ethanol with conc. sulfuric acid:

  • When ethanol C2H5OH reacts with hot concentrated sulfuric acidH2SO4, it produces etheneC2H4 and waterH2O.
  • The chemical reaction can be depicted as:

C2H5OH(l)+H2SO4(l)C2H4(l)+H2O(l)
