Open in App
Solution

IUPAC:

  • IUPAC is the abbreviation for International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.
  • IUPAC is the system of nomenclature used to name the chemical compounds.

IUPAC name of CH2=CH-CN:

Step 1: Determination of the root word.

  • Select the continuous chain with the maximum number of carbon atoms containing the functional group such that the functional group gets the lowest possible number.
  • Here the chain has 3 carbon atoms, hence the root word will be “Prop”.

Step 2: Identifying the name and position of locants and functional groups

  • The given organic compound is polyfunctional thus one of the functional groups should be made the principal functional group
  • The principal functional group is chosen as per the decreasing order of priority given for some functional groups.
  • The decreasing order of priority is:
  • -COOH,-SO3H,-COOR,COCl,-CONH2,-CN,-HC=O,>C=O,-OH,>C=C<,-CC-
  • As per the given organic compound, there is a nitrile group and a double group present thus as per the decreasing order of priority -CN>C=C, thus nitrile group is the primary functional group, and thus lowest numbering is 1 is given to it

Step 3: Adding prefix and suffixes:

  • Locant + Prefix + Root + Locant + Suffix
  • Thus, the name will be.Prop-2-ene-1-nitrile.
