Question

Write three main postulates of VSEPR Theory.

Open in App
Solution

VSEPR hypothesis:

  • It is used to anticipate the shape of molecules based on the electron pairs that encircle the molecule's core atoms.

Important Postulates of VSEPR Theory:

  • The quantity of valence shell electron pairs (bonded or unbonded) surrounding the core atom determines the structure of the molecule.
  • Because their electron clouds are negatively charged, pairs of electrons in their outermost shell repel one another.
  • These electron pairs tend to occupy locations in space that optimize repulsion and so increase the distance between them.
  • The valence shell is modeled as a sphere, with electron pairs located on the spherical surface at the greatest possible distance from one another.
  • Multiple bonds are viewed as a single electron pair, and their two or three electron pairs are handled as a single super pair.
  • The VSEPR model applies to any structure that has two or more resonance structures that can represent a molecule.
