Sample Mean Formula

Sample mean formula is the formula to find mean of the collected data. To find the mean or the average of a collection of the sample, then we use the sample mean formula. For example, we might need to find the average size of the t shirt of a particular class, then we use the sample mean formula. The sample mean of the collected data is calculated by adding the numbers and then dividing the number of data collected.

What is Sample Mean Formula?

Sample mean formula is given below:

\[\large \overline{x}=\frac{\sum_{i-1}^{n}x_{i}}{n}\]

Where,
x̄ = sample mean

\(\begin{array}{l}\sum_{i=1}^{n}x_{i} = x_1+x_2+….+x_n\end{array} \)

n = Total number of terms
x1, x2…….xn are different values.

Solved Example on Sample Mean Formula

Question: The total marks obtained by few students in mathematics exam are 101, 161, 155, 96 and 83. Evaluate the sample mean marks ?

Solution:
Mean,

\(\begin{array}{l}\bar{x} = \frac{\sum_{i=1}^{n}x_{i}}{n}\end{array} \)

Total number of terms(n) = 5

Mean,

\(\begin{array}{l}\bar{x} = \frac{101 + 161 + 155 + 96 + 83}{5}\end{array} \)

= 119.2
