Globe and Maps

A globe is a spherical model of Earth. The purpose of the globe is similar to that of maps. This article will show brief details about the globe and maps.

Globe

  • A globe might show a network of longitude lines and latitude lines. A globe might show the location of major cities, countries, and continents.
  • The purpose of the globe is almost the same as maps.
  • In a globe, the surface of the earth is not distorted, unlike maps.
  • The terrestrial globe is a model globe of the earth.
  • A terrestrial globe will show the water bodies and landmass.
  • The word globe is derived from the Latin word “globus” which means sphere.
  • Erdapfel is known to be the oldest surviving globe. It was made in 1492. This globe was made by Martin Behaim.

Maps

  • A world map is a map of most or all of the surface of the earth.
  • Maps of the world usually focus either on physical features or political features.
  • The land use, soil type, mountains, rivers, hills, lakes, and oceans are the geographical features shown on physical maps.
  • Human settlements and political maps are emphasised on political maps.
  • Apart from physical maps and political maps, there are also choropleth maps and geological maps.
  • Choropleth maps use colour hue and intensity to contrast differences between regions such as economic or demographic statistics.
  • Apart from the surface, subsurface structures, fault lines, and characteristics of the underlying rock are also shown in geological maps.
  • The earth is a three-dimensional surface whereas maps are in two dimensions which results in distorting the surface of the earth.
  • All the maps in the world are based on one of several map projections or methods of representing a globe on a plane.
  • In all the projections, the directions, distances, and geographical features are distorted in different ways.
  • Some of the most well-known map projections are the Mollweide projection, Mercator projection, Gall-Peters projection, Polar azimuthal equidistant projection, etc.
  • Another very popular map is the thematic map. A thematic map shows geographical information about one or a few focused subjects.
