6 easy tips to increase your child’s concentration

“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.”– Fred Rogers, TV personality

A child learns differently from an adult. And as a parent, it isn’t an easy task to keep them occupied and engaged throughout the day. You will have to get down to their level to understand the world through their eyes. In today’s times, it is inevitable for the child to lose focus due to sensory overload. How you increase your child’s concentration and the little measures you take will go a long way in helping them focus better.

Here are some simple parenting tips to help you keep your child engaged and improve their concentration levels.

  • Build a routine
Create a time table where you get your child to do a certain task at the same time every day. It prepares the child about what is expected of him/her at a certain time. This way, they are ready for the homework, study or play in that allotted time and have their focus attuned for the same.
  • Restrict the instruction
Clouding your child with too many instructions or tasks at a time will certainly dwindle their attention. Ensure that each instruction is specific and appropriate for your child’s age and maturity. It sets the bar for their attentiveness in performing the given task. Anything too simple or too complex will not get their attention. Your child often loves a good challenge that they can accomplish.
  • Nutrition for focus and concentration
Food plays a primary role when it comes to your child’s energy, moods and ability to do things. A healthy dietary routine is key. There are foods that are famed for improving concentration and memory. These foods include green leafy, colourful vegetables, cheese, milk and nuts.
  • Exercise
Children often have a lot of energy and don’t quite know what to do with all of it! Getting them to exercise helps expend the excess energy and channelise it the right way, allowing them to do a task without too much distraction. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind, exercising allows your child to concentrate better. The exercise time can also serve as your fun time together with your child.
  • Games
Concentration games like puzzles, tongue twisters, memory games, etc. are some great ways to help improve your child’s concentration. You could also try teaching them a lesson through a game. For example, teaching them an alphabet may not be limited to a notebook and pencil but you could create the alphabet out of playdough, or get them to paint it. Experiment with such concentration improving games as per your child’s interests and watch their concentration levels increase.
  • Rest
Be mindful of your child’s rest. Plan for periods of rest during the day and a good night’s sleep. A well-rested mind and body have heightened concentration power. Implementing a healthy and cosy sleep schedule helps improve their concentration during the day.

Implementing these simple hacks by modifying as per your child’s unique requirements can help parents like you boost your child’s concentration. For instance, you may find that mixing physical activity with a mental activity is very effective for keeping your child engaged. Do let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Happy parenting!
