Start your next creative adventure with BYJU’S – ‘One Hobby A Month’!

Team StoryWeavers|January 31, 2019, 05:12 IST| 244

A New Year! A New Adventure!

Hobbies are a great way to learn something new, hike your knowledge graph and find your creative edge amidst a lot of fun!

This year, let’s make a habit of exploring interesting hobbies like – collecting unique coin, playing a musical instrument, swimming, gardening or even model building with Lego!t

The best way to cultivate a hobby is to try out one. So here is something to get you started.

Begin this year by entering into a Bookish Adventure! (apart from reading your school textbooks, of course!)

There is nothing better than the company of a good book. It takes you places, lets you travel through time and space and gives you the experience of becoming the protagonist in every story that you read! (Isn’t that cool?) Above all, it cultivates your personality and boosts your confidence by offering you the wealth of information that even Google can’t precisely offer.

Where to begin?

You can start from anywhere – be it short stories, novels, graphics & illustrations, sci-fi, historical romance, biographies or even mysteries.

Here is a list of books to help you jump-start and become a voracious reader:

Books by Indian writers Books by writers from around the world
  • Malgudi Days  – RK Narayan
  • Amar Chitra Katha – Anant Pai
  • Granny’s Sari – Asha Nehemiah
  • The Palace of Illusion – Chitra Banerjee
  • Short Stories – Munchi Premchand
  • Mayil will not be quiet – Niveditha Subramaniam and Sowmya Rajendran
  • A Room on the Roof – Ruskin Bond
  • The Blue Umbrella – Ruskin Bond
  • Wings of Fire – Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam
  • The Cat in the Hat – Dr. Seuss
  • We Found a Hat – Jon Klassen
  • Alice in Wonderland – Lewis Carroll
  • Dave’s Cave by Frann Preston – Gannon
  • Famous Five – Enid Blyton
  • When the Sea turned to Silver – Grace Lin
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – Roald Dahl
  • Sputnik’s Guide to Life on Earth – Frank Cottrell Boyce
  • Harry Potter Series – J. K. Rowling
  • After the Fall (How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again) – Dan Santat
  • The Da Vinci Code – Dan Brown
  • Adventures of Huckleberry Finn – Mark Twain
  • Magic faraway Tree – Enid Blyton

While you are all grooved up to make your own list of books to read, you might also want to look at the other side of the coin…writing! You can begin by scribbling short notes on book reviews or your favorite characters. Make this a habit and before you know it, you may find yourself becoming a great writer.

Reading as a hobby is not something you can develop in a day. It takes a lot of patience and concentration. So take your time, start with one book a month and enjoy the pure bliss of flipping through new adventures! Don’t forget to tell us which one is your favourite.

Happy Reading 🙂

I recently read a book the crows of aagra. A wonderfull historical piece of creativity by Sharat Commaraju. It is the perfect book for any thriller lover. The story, from beginning to end is filled with twists and tragedies. Its a really great story of how *Birbal* got his name. The story takes place in the mugal kingdom when akbar ws the ruler. A young ruler, only 20. His father Humayun had passed away at a young age, living young akbar to rule. He was too young to rule a kingdom due to which, his father’s close friend, Khan baba as he addressed, ruled the kingdom for him. They had fights due to Akbar’s mother. At the end Akbar killed Khan baba who was to leave for Mecca the very next day as he was sure that Khan baba was not going to Mecca but would be around to fight him, in Aagra. He did a bandit to find who has killed Khan baba to check his intelligence. Clever young Hindu priest took his own time to find and akbar honoured him with the name Birbal. I would suggest this to all keen readers. Thanks.?

My favorite book I read this year was ‘speed post’ by famous writer Shoba Dè. She is an Indian author. This book is a sought of biography. It is a set of letters, she wrote to her children(6 of them). It discusses a lot of things children ought to know. It is a good book for people of all ages as it tells children of what parents want them to be and parents how each child is a different personality and they should not impose their ideas on their young minds. I suggest this book to all the biography lovers.?

I highly recommend Percy Jackson series for beginners. It contains enough excitement and fun to keep the children reading it on. Dan Brown writes awesome books but they are more suited for oolder individuals due to their complex vocabulary and slightly mature content. I’m a huge bibliophile. Last year I read 56 books. And this year in January I’ve already read 9 books, perhaps will be finishing the 10th book by 31st of the month. 😉 They all were of different
genres and I enjoyed every minute of reading.
Out of this book list I’ve already read –
Malgudi Days,The Palace of Illusions,The Blue Umbrella,Wings of Fire,Alice in Wonderland,
Famous Five,Harry Potter series and The Da Vinci Code.
All of these are super interesting and amazing books. I’m glad Byju’s took this creative initiative for the students.

And out of all the books I’ve read,my favourite is ‘The Kite Runner’.

I loved this article and Good Luck to everyone who’s going to try their hands at reading. It’s going to be an amazing experience.
