The difference is that when multiplying decimals, the decimal must also be considered.  To multiply a decimal number by a decimal number, we must first multiply the two numbers without the decimal places and then put the decimal place back in the product so that the decimal places in the product are equal to the sum of the decimal places in the original numbers.

Step 1: For the first step, ignore the decimal point and multiply the numbers as you normally would.

Step 2: Once the multiplication is done, count the decimal places in the numbers provided to you. The product will have the same number of decimal places. 

Step 3: Now, once the number of decimal places has been identified, put it in the final product. 

  • Example 1

15 * 6.5 

15 has no decimal places

6.5 has one decimal place

The final product obtained by multiplying just the whole number is 975.

But since there is one decimal place present, your final product will be 97.5

  • Example 2

 0.03 * 1.1

0.03 has 2 decimal places

1.1 has 1 decimal place

The final product is obtained by multiplying decimals whole numbers i.e., 3 * 11 is 33

But since there are 3 decimal places present, your final product will be 0.033

Unlike in the examples mentioned above, if you multiply any decimal number with 10, 100, or 1000, then the decimal point, instead of moving to the left, shifts to the right. 

Example: 2.32 * 10= 23.2
