Subtraction of Numbers using Addition of Numbers (Definition, Types and Examples) - BYJUS

Subtraction of Numbers using Addition of Numbers

Addition and subtraction are closely related to each other. Subtraction is the inverse or the opposite process of addition. We can use addition to perform subtraction by finding the number to be added to the subtrahend to get the minuend. This method proves that subtraction can be made easier by being fluent in addition....Read MoreRead Less

What is meant by Subtraction of Numbers?

Subtraction refers to removing or taking away objects from a group or collection. When we subtract from a group, the number of items in the group decreases. A subtraction problem includes the minuend, subtrahend, and difference.

Addition

Subtraction

An arithmetic operation in which numbers combine to form a new number that is greater than the numbers being added.

An arithmetic operation in which numbers are subtracted from each other and give a new number that is smaller than the numbers being added.

Addition is represented by the symbol “+” or “plus” symbol.

Subtraction is represented by the symbol “-” or “minus”.

It is a basic arithmetic operation.

It is a secondary arithmetic operation.

Example: 21 + 32 = 53

Example: 34 - 14 = 20

How to Use Addition to Subtract on an Open Number Line?

We always begin with subtrahends and start adding the numbers until we get the minuend.

Example 1: Find the value of 201 – 80.

Solution:

                     201 – 80 = 121

addition

The image above shows that the number line starts from 80 and if 100 is added to it, the result will be 180.  Post that, if 10 is added, the result will be 190. If 10 is added again, the result will be 200. Furthermore, if 1 is added, the result will be 201.

We can verify the result by adding the numbers on the number line:

100 + 10 + 10 + 1 = 121

Hence, the result will be 121.

Example 2: Jessica has $200 in her purse. She bargains and buys a dress for Valentine’s Night for $120. Find the amount of money left with Jessica after she buys her dress.

currency

Solution:

The amount left with Jessica = Amount in purse – final price of the dress

$200 – $120 = $80

Since the final price of the dress is $120, the number line will start from 120 as given below:

add

The image above shows that the number line starts from 120 and if 50 is added to it, the result will be 170. After that, if 10 is added, the result will be 180. If 10 is added again, the result will be 190. Furthermore, if 10 is added again, the result will be 200.

We can verify the result by adding the numbers on the number line:

So, 50 + 10 + 10 + 10 = $80

Hence, Jessica will be left with $80.

Example 3: Daniel discovered 7 more baseballs on the floor after finding 7 baseballs in a basket in the storeroom. A student borrows five baseballs from him. How many baseballs did the storeroom have?

balls

Solution:

7 baseballs are on the floor and 7 more in the basket. Then a student borrowed 5 baseballs from them.

Total balls in the room: 7 + 7 = 14

Now, the student has borrowed 5 baseballs.

So, 14 – 5 = 9

There are a total of 9 baseballs left in the room.

Frequently Asked Questions

The sum and difference of two numbers are found using the arithmetic operations of addition and subtraction, respectively. Subtraction is denoted by a “minus” sign or “-” and addition is denoted by a plus sign or “+”. Both operations are the inverse of one another.

Addition and subtraction are essential to several activities we do daily, such as paying bills at the store, buying groceries, travelling, calculating the speed of a vehicle, determining weight, and so on. It assists us in comprehending problems that are situational. As a result, addition and subtraction play quite an important role in our lives.
