What is Meant by Adding Radicals?
In Maths, adding radicals means the addition of radical values (i.e., root values). The root may be a square root, cube root or the nth root. The radical represents the root symbol. The number present under the radical symbol (√) is called the radicand, and the number present on the upper left side of the root symbol is called the index, and the number present in front of the root symbol is called the coefficient.
For example, 12 3√9
Here,
12 is the coefficient
3 is the index
9 is the radicand.
If the index and the radicand values are the same, then directly add the coefficient.
For example, 4 √2 + 10 √2, the sum is
4 √2 + 10 √2 = 14 √2 .
If the index and the radicand values are different, then simplify each radical such that the index and radical values should be the same.
For example, √98 + √50.
Here, the index values are the same, but the radicand values are different. So, simplify each radical, we get
√98 + √50 = 7√2+ 5√2
√98 + √50 = 12 √2.
