What is Meant by Angular Acceleration?

In Physics, the angular acceleration is also known as the rotational acceleration. The angular acceleration is defined as the ratio of the rate of change of angular velocity to the time taken by the object in motion. It is denoted by the letter alpha (α). The SI unit of angular acceleration is radian per second square (rad/s2). If the torque and the moment of inertia are given, then the angular acceleration is calculated by using the formula:

Angular acceleration = Torque / Moment of inertia 

If the angular velocity of the rotating object and the time is given, then the formula is

α = Δω/Δt

Δω = Change in angular velocity

Δt = Change in time

Find the angular acceleration of the rotating object if the torque exerted by the body is 26 rad/s and the moment of inertia is 0.2 kg.m2.

Solution:

Given:

Torque = 26

Moment of inertia = 0.2

We know that,

Angular acceleration = Torque/ Moment of inertia

Substitute the values in the formula, we get

Angular acceleration = 26/0.2

Angular acceleration = 130 rad/s2.
