Staphylococcus genus of bacteria are immobile Gram-positive bacteria. They are harmful to humans and mammals as they cause various diseases among them. Examples include S. aureus,S. intermedius, etc. They are small-sized bacteria with a diameter of 0.5 μm to 2 μm.

The growth pattern of Staphylococcus appears to be in clusters, pairs and in short chains. Staphylococci divide in three planes because of which they form clusters. Though different stages of cell division among various species of Staphylococcus bacteria also show them to be spherical and elongated.

S. aureus appears to be spherical before the initiation of division septum formation at the initial stage of cell division, followed by which they appear to be elongated. During the second stage, after the synthesis of division septum, the cell does not elongate significantly. Lastly, at the final stage before splitting into two daughter cells, the cells (with complete septum) appear to be elongated again.
