Ikr Meaning and How to Use

Electronic communication has become a part of our lives. It has been considered the fastest mode of communication. With the growing importance of electronic communication, the use of internet language or internet slang has increased as well. Not only kids but even adults use a variety of abbreviations in their everyday conversation. We will be discussing a commonly used abbreviation, ‘ikr’, in this article.

Meaning of Ikr

Ikr is the abbreviation for the phrase ‘I know, right’. We use this term or this phrase when we agree with someone else’s point. When a person makes a statement, and you already know about it, or you agree with the statement, you can say Ikr, or I know, right. It is the modern way of saying that you agree with the person.

According to some critics, using the term “right” in ‘I know, right’ turns the statement into a question. But, the usage of “right” is actually a way of emphasising your point, that you are already aware of the point or you agree with the person. Adding “isn’t” instead of “right” can also work in a similar way.

Usage of Ikr

Ikr is a bit different from saying I know because it shows that you strongly believe or agree with the other person’s view. It can also give you a feeling of relief that someone else is sharing your feelings about something.

The term Ikr is mostly used in informal communication, especially while texting. There is no need to put any commas or write the term in all capital letters. You can write it in all caps if you wish to emphasise your words. We have provided a few examples below for your better understanding.

Examples:

  • “Daisy’s hair colour is so pretty.”

“IKR, that suits her so well. I was about to say the same.”

  • “I don’t think I can do well in this test.”

“Ikr? We haven’t even completed the lessons.”

  • “I really hate when people call me continuously, even after disconnecting the call.”

“IKR? It annoys me too.”
