Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE)

FMGE is the abbreviation for Foreign Medical Graduate Examination. The examination started in the year 2002. It is a licensing examination conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). The examination is conducted for the Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and the Indian citizens who have pursued their primary medical education at a medical institution outside India but want to practice in India. All such licence-seeking candidates must qualify for this examination to register with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or the State Medical Council (SMC).

Candidates must note that FMGE is not an entrance examination. Thus, no candidate will be provided admission to a medical institution on qualifying for this examination. FMGE is a licensing examination for foreign medical candidates. The examination is conducted twice a year, once in June and the other in December.

FMGE 2023 Eligibility Criteria

The important Eligibility Criteria for FMGE 2023 December Session are given hereunder.

  1. Nationality: The candidate must be either a citizen of India or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI).
  2. Qualification: The candidate must have pursued primary medical education and have a certificate for the same. The certificate should be approved by the concerned Indian embassy of the place.
  3. Documents Required: The candidates must present proof of their primary medical qualification. If, however, a candidate fails to present proof of their primary medical qualification, then, they will be debarred from the examination.
  4. Result: The final result of the candidate’s primary medical programme must have been declared on or before October 31, 2023.
  5. Exemptions: Candidates who have completed their undergraduate medical programme from the below-given countries do not need to appear in FMGE to acquire a licence for medical practice in India under the Medical Council of India (MCI). The candidates who have pursued their primary medical courses in these countries are eligible to enrol as medical practitioners in India. These countries are

FMGE 2023 Exam Pattern

The Exam Pattern for FMGE is designed by the National Board of Education (NBE). The Exam Patten for FMGE 2023 was released by NBE on the official website. The exam pattern for FMGE 2023 provides details about the number and types of questions that will be asked in the examination.

The exam pattern also provides information such as the duration, date and time of examination, marks carried by each question, total marks and negative marking (if any). FMGE is conducted in an online Computer-based Test (CBT) Mode. The FMGE 2023 Question Paper will consist of Objective/Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), in which the candidate will be provided with four sets of options having only 1 correct answer. The candidate must select only the correct answer.

The examination will last for 5 hours, and consist of 300 questions. Each question in the examination will carry an equal weightage of marks. Each question carries 1 mark and there will be no negative marking during the evaluation. The exam pattern for FMGE 2023 is given below:

FMGE 2023 Syllabus

The Medical Council of India (MCI) determines the syllabus for FMGE. The determined syllabus for FMGE 2023 is released along with the Official Information Brochure by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). The Syllabus for FMGE 2023 includes topics from subjects like General Surgery, Psychiatry, Pathology, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, Anaesthesia, Forensic Medicine, Dermatology, Radiotherapy, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Physiology, Tuberculosis, Radio Diagnosis, Pharmacology, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Otorhinolaryngology, Community Medicine and more.

FMGE 2023 Application Form

The applications for FMGE, 2023 were invited from September 9, 2023. The application window remained open till September 29, 2023. The application forms for FMGE 2023 will only be accepted online and no application forms sent via post directly to the NBE will be accepted. The application window for appearing in FMGE 2023 will remain open for a span of 20 days (tentative). Candidates can find the link to fill out the FMGE application form online on the official website, i.e., nbe.edu.in.

For the online application, candidates must proceed according to the following steps:

  1. Candidates must first register themselves and create an account by clicking on the “FMGE 2023 Registrations” tab on the official NBE website. The candidates must register only with a valid phone number and email ID as these will be the only source of communication with the examination organising committee during the complete admission process.
  2. After the registration, the candidates must log in with the credentials received and fill in the details required in the FMGE application form.
  3. The candidates must also upload the scanned copy of specific documents in the desired format.
  4. Verify all the entered details before proceeding to submit the online application form.
  5. Submit the FMGE application form by paying the full amount of FMGE application form fee according to the candidate’s category.

Candidates will receive the confirmation for the submission of the FMGE online application form on their registered phone number and email ID.

FMGE 2023 Admit Card

The admit cards for FMGE 2023 will be released on the official NBE website on November 28, 2023. The FMGE admit cards 2023 will be released only for the candidates who have successfully completed the application process. The FMGE 2023 admit card will remain available on the candidate’s portal till the day of examination. Candidates must take the printout of the downloaded FMGE admit card. They must carry the printout of the downloaded admit card and a photo ID card for the verification of identity on the day of examination. In case of failure to bring the admit card and the photo ID card to the examination centre on the examination day, the candidate will not be allowed to appear for the examination.

FMGE 2023 Results

The FMGE results or pass certificates must be collected by the candidates in person. Candidates must be present on the stipulated date and time as prescribed by NBE. Candidates will be provided an entry slip to be able to enter the NBE premises. The candidates must take a printout of the entry slip along with other required original documents on the day of collecting their pass certificates. FMGE 2023 results will be released on December 30, 2023.

Candidates must note that any person other than the candidates themselves will be provided with the pass certificates. Therefore, candidates must collect their certificates themselves.
