What is the full form of DSP?

The full form of DSP is Deputy Superintendent of Police. DSP is a police officer grade at the Indian police force. DSP is a representative of the state police who directs the state police officers. The rank symbol for this officer is a national symbol on the strap of the shoulder, above one star.

DSP is similar to ACP (Assistant Commissioner of Police) and may be elevated to IPS after a few years of service according to state government laws. Examinations are performed annually to appoint police forces to the DSP level directly. Inspectors are often promoted to DSP after the mentioned years of service.

Eligibility criteria for DSP:

  • Applicants must be Indian residents.
  • Candidates must have graduated from a recognised board or educational institution in any stream.
  • The nominee must be between 21 years old and 30 years old. 5-year relaxation is available in the upper age limit for SC / ST applicants.
  • The least height needed is 168 centimetres for male applicants, and 155 centimetres for female applicants.
  • For men, the minimum chest expected is 84 centimetres, with the least expansion of 5 centimetres.

However, for state police, to get promoted to DSP, he/she must hold a higher rank in the service and meet the required criteria.

Process of selection

The candidate who wants to become a DSP must take part in the State level test carried out by the State Public Service Commission. The candidates who pass this exam undergo probationary training before they are posted as DSPs. The following are the steps to be selected as a DSP.

  • Preliminary and Main Written Examination
  • PET (Physical efficiency test)
  • Medical test and interview.
