What is the Full form of OPD?
The full form of OPD is the Outpatient Department. An OPD is structured as the primary point of communication between the patient and the medical professionals in a medical department.
An OPD is generally located on the ground floor of each hospital and split into several sections, such as the Department of Neurology, the Department of Gynaecology, the Department of Orthopaedics, the Department of Oncology, the Department of General Medicine and so on. A patient who arrives at the hospital for consultation goes to the specific section of OPD according to their complaints.
Difference between outpatient and inpatient
The distinction between inpatient and outpatient treatment depends on how long a patient needs to stay in the hospital.
An outpatient is a person who gets care or treatment at the clinic or hospital only for a few hours without getting hospitalised.
A person hospitalised overnight for at least a day to several days or weeks for treatment is known as an inpatient.
