No, the GATE exam is not compulsory to get admission to the IIT. There is one more alternative and it is JEE. Candidates can also go for this exam. Through JEE, they can take admission in the graduation program also, while through GATE, they can only take admission in the post graduate program. So, now the choice is completely yours. Candidates need to decide one door to get into IIT.
