The Central Statistical office is responsible for preparing the estimates of National Income in India.
Formed on 2nd May 1951, it works under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The office of CSO is located in Delhi.
In 2019, National Statistical Office was established by merging CSO and NSSO (National Sample Survey Organization)
It manages and implements all activities related to statistics in India. It is also responsible for maintaining statistical standards. The main functions of CSO are:
National Income Accounting
Conducting Annual Survey of Industries
Conducting Economic Census and follow-up surveys.
Compilation of the Index of Industrial Production and Consumer Price Indices.
Development of Statistics related to Five Year Plan
Disseminating statistical information
The important publications of CSO are (1)The statistical abstract in India and (2)The monthly abstract of Statistics.
Prof. Bimal Kumar Roy is the present Chairperson of the National Statistical Commission.
