Portugal was the first European country to establish a colony in India and they were the last ones to leave. British paramountcy and local wars against Indian rulers made it lose some of its initial holdings until only Goa, Diu Daman, Nagar Haveli and Mahe were left. Following the outbreak of hostilities in 1961 with India, the Indian army invaded its holdings in Diu and Daman and Goa.
It ended in Indian victory and almost 5 centuries of Portuguese presence in India had come to an end.
