The elephant bird became extinct around 1000-1200 AD because of human activity. Elephant birds were members of the extinct family of ratites Aepyornithidae, which consisted of large enormous flightless birds that once inhabited the island of Madagascar.
Their closest living relatives are kiwi which are found only in New Zealand.
