The phytoplankton is a plant different from its animal counterpart, the zooplankton. Phytoplankton are similar to terrestrial plants in that they contain chlorophyll and require sunlight in order to live and grow.
Phytoplankton are usually found along coastlines. Winds play a strong role in the distribution of
phytoplankton because they drive currents that cause deep water, loaded with nutrients, to be pulled up to the surface.
