Simon Commission came to India in 1928.
Also known as the Indian Statutory Commission, it was a group of 7 members, who came to India to study the drawbacks of the reforms in Britain’s most important dominion.
Headed by Sir John Simon, their primary objective was to analyze and understand the effect of Constitutional Reforms and suggest further recommendations on the governance in India.No Indians were a part of the Commission.
The Simon Commission faced severe criticism from Indian political leaders. The call for boycotting the commission was initiated by Tej Bahadur Sapru and backed by the Indian National Congress, Hindu Mahasabha, and a section of the Muslim League under Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
The Simon Commission was welcomed with the slogan ‘Simon Go Back’. The slogan was introduced by Yusuf Meherally.
The Simon Commission recommended abolition of the Dyarchy and granted provincial autonomy. The commission also proposed to increase the number of members in the Provincial legislative council.
The Government of India Act,1935 was passed as an aftereffect of the Simon Commission.
