Gir National Park is the only location in Asia which provides safe haven for the Asiatic Lions. The Asiatic Lions were once spread throughout the continent but a combination of hunting and habitat destruction drastically reduced their numbers.

The ecosystem at the Gir National Park is protected as a result of the efforts of the government forest department, wildlife activists and NGOs.
