The hunting of the Barashinga was banned in 1954. It was the result of extensive poaching and hunting that had led to a terminal decline of the Barasingha population in 1954.
Also known as Swamp deer, it lost most of its former range because wetlands were converted and used for agriculture so that suitable habitat was reduced to small and isolated fragments
