Addition questions with solutions are given here for students to practice and improve their skills. Addition is one of the arithmetic operations in mathematics that are multiplication, division, subtraction and addition. This mathematical operation is introduced in elementary classes to teach kids how to add two or more numbers.
Addition is taught to kids using various methods which are counting using figures (or fingers), adding two numbers using a number line, addition by regrouping and by using addition tables. We can directly add numbers of one digit, but when it comes to adding numbers of more than one digit, we first write the digits of the number according to their place value, then start adding column-wise from right to left.

Addition Questions with Solutions
Below are the questions based on addition operation for practice along with solutions.
Question 1: Find the sum of 1564 and 36789.
Solution:
Therefore, the sum of 36789 and 1564 is 3853.
Question 2: Evaluate:
(i) 236 + 465
(ii) 1678 + 520
(iii) 305 + 698
(iv) 340 + 829
Solution:
(i) 236 + 465 = 701
(ii) 1678 + 520 = 2198
(iii) 305 + 698 = 1003
(iv) 340 + 829 = 1169
Addition and subtraction are inverse operations. For example, 34 + 12 = 46, then 46 – 12 = 34 |
Question 3: How much should be added to 6745 to get 10,000?
Solution:
We to find a number such that 6745 + ___ = 10,000.
Now, 10,000 – 6745 = 3255.
Thus, 3255 should be added to 6745 to get the answer 10,000.
Question 4: Aman daily travels 2 km by autorickshaw 3 km by bus and walks the rest 650m to reach his school. How much distance does he daily cover to reach school?
Solution:
Distance travelled by autorickshaw = 2 km
Distance travelled by bus = 3 km
Distance he walks = 655 m = 0.655 km (since, 1 km = 1000 m)
Total distance travelled = 2 km + 3 km + 0.655 km = 5.655 km or 5 km 655 m.
Question 5: What is the sum of 450 and 15 less than 50?
Solution:
15 less than 50 = 50 – 15 = 35
Now, 450 + 35 = 485.
Question 6: Add 23.78 and 6.927.

Question 7: If there are 52 students in section A, 55 students in section B and 58 students in section C of a class in a school. Find the total number of students in that class.
Solution:
Number of students in section A = 52
Number of students in section B = 55
Number of students in section C = 58
Total number of students = 52 + 55 + 58 = 165
Therefore, there are 165 students in that class.
Question 8: A tailor requires 3 metres of cloth to make a shirt and 4.5 metres of cloth to make a pant. Find the total length of cloth required to stitch 2 shirts and one pant.
Solution:
Length of cloth required to stitch a shirt = 3 m
Length of cloth required to stitch a pant = 4.5 m
Total cloth required to stitch two shirts and one pant = (3 + 3 + 4.5)m = 10.5 m
Question 9: Evaluate 1298 + 6936 + 4590
Solution:
∴ 1298 + 6936 + 4590 = 12824.
Question 10: Amina goes to market and buys groceries for ₹ 2300, stationeries for ₹ 550 and had a milkshake for ₹ 200. How much did she spend in total?
Solution:
Cost of groceries = ₹ 2300
Cost of stationeries = ₹ 550

Therefore, Amina spent ₹ 3050.
Question 11: Add mentally:
(i) 1500 + 350
(ii) 3456 + 156
(iii) 873 + 120
Solution:
(i) 1500 + 350
To calculate mentally,
Step 1: Calculate (500 + 300) + 1000 = 1800
Step 2: 1800 + 50 = 1850
(ii) 3456 + 156
To calculate mentally,
Step 1: (456 + 100) + 3000 = 3556
Step 2: 3556 + 50 = 3606
Step 3: 3606 + 6 = 3612
(iii) 873 + 120
To calculate mentally,
Step 1: 873 + 100 = 973
Step 2: 973 + 20 = 993
