Face Value

In Mathematics, face value is the actual value of the digit in a number. For example, if 567 is a number, then the face value of 6 is 6 only, whereas its place value is tens (i.e. 60). Thus, for any number, having a two-digit, three-digit or ‘n’ number of digits, every digit will have a place value and a face value.

Face value is the actual value of a digit in a number.

Face Value of Digits in Maths

  • Face value of 0 in a number is 0
  • Face value of 1 in a number is 1
  • Face value of 2 in a number is 2
  • Face value of 3 in a number is 3
  • Face value of 4 in a number is 4
  • Face value of 5 in a number is 6
  • Face value of 7 in a number is 7
  • Face value of 8 in a number is 8
  • Face value of 9 in a number is 9

Thus, the face value is defined for all the ten digits from 0 to 9.

Face Value and Place Value in Maths

We have already discussed in the introduction, face value is the actual value of the digit. Place value defines the position of the digit in a number, such as once, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands, and so on.

For example, in the number 345, the place value of 5 is 5, 4 is 40 and 3 is 300.

345 → 300 + 40 + 5 → Three hundreds + Forty + Five

Let us find the face values of digits for different numbers with examples. Also, we will see the place value for the same number.

Example: Find the place value and face value of digits in 5689.

Solution: Given the number is 5689.

Face value of 9 is 9 and Place value of 9 is 9

Face value of 8 is 8 and place value of 8 is 80 (Eighty)

Face value of 6 is 6 and place value of 6 is 600 (Six hundred)

Face value of 5 is 5 and place value of 5 is 5000 (Five thousand)

Therefore, we can see, the face value of the digits in number 5689 represents the actual value of the digit.
