Subtraction questions with solutions are given here for students to practice and improve their skills. Subtraction is one of the arithmetic operations in mathematics: multiplication, division, subtraction and addition. This mathematical operation is introduced in elementary classes to teach kids how to subtract two or more numbers. Subtraction questions with solutions are given here for students to practice and improve their skills.
The minus sign ‘–’ is used to denote subtraction. We often use words like – “difference”, “take away”, “less than”, “deduct”, “minus”, “decrease”, “remaining”, etc., to express subtraction. For example, there are 10 oranges in a basket; if 6 oranges are taken away, how many oranges are left?
To find the answer, we have to subtract 6 from 10, that is, 10 – 6 = 4. In many of our daily life situations, we unknowingly use subtraction – while shopping, we use subtraction to pay the amount to the shopkeeper. Hence, it is essential for kids to practice subtraction questions thoroughly.

(i) 23 – 9 = 14 (Subtract by regrouping)
Refer: Addition and Subtraction
(ii) 89 – 67 = 22
(iii) 7 – 5 = 2
(iv) 65 – 34 = 31
Question 2: Subtract the following:
(i) 289 from 340
(ii) 196 from 762
(iii) 20 from 786
Solution:
(i) 289 from 340
340 – 289 = 51

Question 3: Evaluate the following:
(i) – 234 + 120
(ii) 90 – ( – 30)
(iii) 378 + ( – 38)
(iv) 1001 – 120 + 100
Solution:
(i) – 234 + 120 = –114
(ii) 90 – ( – 30) = 90 + 30 = 120
(iii) 378 + ( – 38) = 378 – 38 = 340
(iv) 1001 – 120 + 100 = (1001 + 100) – 120
= 1101 – 120 = 981
Question 4: Evaluate the following:
(i) 33/2 – 15/2
(ii) 4/3 – 5/3 + 8/3
(iii) 6/5 + 9/2 – 14/5
Solution:
(i) 33/2 – 15/2 = (33 – 15)/2 = 18/2 = 9
(ii) 4/3 – 5/3 + 8/3 = (4 – 5 + 8)/3 = {(4 + 8) – 5}/3
= {12 – 5}/3 = 7/3
(iii) 6/5 + 9/2 – 14/5 = (6/5 + 9/2) – 14/5
= [(6 × 2)/(5 × 2) + (9 × 5)/(2 × 5)] – 14/5
= [12/10 + 45/10] – 14/5
= 57/10 – 14/5
= 57/10 – (14 × 2)/(5 × 2)
= 57/10 – 28/10 = 29/10 = 2.9.
Question 5: Evaluate the following:
(i) Take away the sum of 120 and 38 from 250.
(ii) Twice the difference of 230 and 67.
(iii) x equals to 5 less than three times 32.
(iv) A deduction of ₹ 300 from the bill of ₹ 650.
Solution:
(i) Take away the sum of 120 and 38 from 250
250 – ( 120 + 38 ) = 250 – 158
= 92.
(ii) Twice the difference of 230 and 67
2 × ( 230 – 67 ) = 2 × 163 = 326.
(iii) x equals to 5 less than three times 32
(3 × 32) – 5 = x
Or, 96 – 5 = x
∴ x = 91.
(iv) A deduction of ₹ 300 from the bill of ₹ 650.
₹ 650 – ₹ 300 = ₹ 350.
Question 6: Fill in the blanks:
(i) 628 + ___ = 1000
(ii) 87 – ___ + 21 = 93
(iii) ___ – 100 = 283
(iv) 94 + ___ – 45 = 107
Solution:
(i) 628 + ___ = 1000
Now, 1000 – 628 = 372
∴ 628 + 372 = 1000.
(ii) 87 – ___ + 21 = 93
93 – 21 = 72
Then, 87 – ___ = 72
Now, 87 – 72 = 15
∴ 87 – 15 + 21 = 93.
(iii) ___ – 100 = 283
283 + 100 = 383
∴ 383 – 100 = 283.
(iv) 94 + ___ – 45 = 107
107 + 45 = 152
So, 94 + ___ = 152
152 – 94 = 58
∴ 94 + 58 – 45 = 107.
Question 7: Find the missing digits:
(i) 2__65 – __5 = __770
(ii) 8__8 – __2__ = 757
(iii) 1__9__ – 7__5 = 573
Solution:
(i) 2865 – 95 = 2770
(ii) 878 – 121 = 757
(iii) 1298 – 725 = 573
Question 8: Find the value of A, B and C:
12215 – 3BA1 = A65C
Solution:
1 |
2 |
2 |
1 |
5 |
– |
3 |
B |
A |
1 |
8 |
6 |
5 |
C |
Now starting from ones column, 5 – 1 = C
⇒ C = 4
In tens column, 1 – A = 5, as 5 > 1, therefore 1 is made 11 by regrouping from the hundreds column.
11 – A = 5
⇒ A = 6
In hundreds column, 1 – B = 6 (as we exchanged 1 into the tens column), again 6 > 1, therefore 1 is made 11 by regrouping from the thousands column
11 – B = 6
⇒ B = 5
Thus, we have 12215 – 3561 = 8654.
Question 9: Monthly salary of Rita is ₹ 30,000. In June she spent ₹ 20,000 and in July she spent ₹ 15,000. How much she saved in these two months?
Solution:
Monthly salary = ₹ 30,000
Expenditure in June = ₹ 20,000
Expenditure in July = ₹ 15,000
Total expenditure = ₹ (20,000 + 15,000) = ₹ 35,000
Total salary = 2 × 30,000 = ₹ 60,000
Total savings = ₹ (60,000 – 35,000) = ₹ 25,000.
Question 10: A tank contains 500 litres of water. There is a small hole in the tank through which the water is leaking. If per hour 1-litre water leaks. How much water is left inside the tank after 5 hours?
Solution:
Amount of water inside the tank = 500 litres
Loss of water in 1 hour = 1 litre
Loss of water in 5 hours = 5 × 1 litre = 5 litres
Water left inside the tank after 5 hours = 500 – 5 = 495 litres of water.
Question 11: A shopkeeper buys a washing machine for ₹ 20,000, then he sells that washing machine for ₹ 25,000. How much profit did the shopkeeper made?
Solution:
Cost price of washing machine = ₹ 20,000
Selling price of washing machine = ₹ 25,000
Profit = ₹ 25,000 – ₹ 20,000 = ₹ 5000
Therefore, the shopkeeper made a profit of ₹ 5000.
Question 12: Find the number which is, when subtracted from 2980, results in the smallest 4-digit number.
Solution:
Smallest 4-digit number = 1000
Now, 2980 – ____ = 1000
Then, 2980 – 1000 = 1980
Therefore, 1980 must be subtracted from 2980 to get 1000.
