Classification based on the chromosome study of organisms is termed cytotaxonomy.
In cytotaxonomy, living things are categorised according to their cellular composition, particularly the number of chromosomes, meiotic behaviour, and their structure. The most used criterion in cytotaxonomy for determining the connection between two organisms is the chromosome structure of each individual. Based on the premise that related species share comparable chromosomal features, species relationships are inferred (known as karyotype).
