Important Differences between E. Coli and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa

E. Coli and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, both are encapsulated, rod-shaped, gram-negative bacteria. The genus of species Pseudomonas Aeruginosa is Pseudomonas, while the genus of species E.coli is Escherichia.

The main difference between E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa lies in its classification, and their family and genus. E.coli is a facultative anaerobic bacterial species belonging to the genus Escherichia, Enterobacteriaceae family. On the other hand, P. aeruginosa is an aerobic bacterial species belonging to the Pseudomonadadaceae family under the Pseudomonas genus.

  • They are non lactose fermenting and are oxidase positive
  • Its culture looks blue-greenish due to the pigment Pyoverdin and Pyocyanin
  • Its virulence factors are exotoxin A, phospholipase C, endotoxin
