The plant Carica papaya, a member of the 22 recognised species in the Carica genus of the family Caricaceae, is often called the papaya, papaw, or pawpaw. It was initially cultivated in Mesoamerica, or present-day southern Mexico and Central America. India supplied 43% of the papayas consumed worldwide in 2020.
