How Many Bones are There in the Human Skeleton?

A total of 206 bones make up the adult human skeleton. These include the vertebrae in the spine, the ribs, the arms, and the legs. A large portion of bones also includes bone marrow, which produces blood cells.

Depending on the sternum count, the adult human skeleton has 206 bones (alternatively, formed as the sternum body, the manubrium, and the xiphoid process). At birth, around 270 bones are present, but later, the axial and appendicular skeleton each include 80 and 126 bones, respectively. Sesamoid bones are excluded.
