The waist bones are also known as the pelvis, pelvic girdle or bony pelvis.
The bones that constitute the pelvis are the sacrum, coccyx, ischium, ilium, and pubis. The pelvic structure helps to distribute weight to the lower limbs from the spine while supporting the organs of the abdomen. The pelvic joints cooperate when a person walks to reduce the force passed from the lower extremities to the vertebrae and upper extremities.
The pelvic girdle, a component of the appendicular skeleton, connects the lower extremities to the axial skeleton. The pectoral girdle joins the axial skeleton and the upper limb.
