IMO Eligibility Criteria

The International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) is held by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) for students in grades 1 to 12. The SOF assesses students’ understanding of logical thinking, Mathematical reasoning, and daily Mathematics. International Mathematics IMO Level 1 is taught to students in grades 1 to 12.

For the benefit of students, the comprehensive IMO Olympiad eligibility conditions are given here. It’s worth noting that the IMO exam qualifying standards are rather lenient and haven’t changed in several years. Before beginning their IMO test preparation, students should familiarise themselves with every aspect of the IMO eligibility criteria for 2022 to ensure they are eligible.

IMO Exam Structure

The question paper consists of four sections:

Section 1: Logical Reasoning

Section 2: Mathematical Reason

Section 3: Everyday Mathematics

Section 4: Achievers Section

(i) There are separate question papers for each date of the exam.

(ii) The medium of the test is English.

(iii) CBSE, ICSE/ISC and State Board syllabi are followed for setting the test papers.

(iv) The exam is conducted during school hours.

Level 2: Level 2 is conducted for students of Class 3 to Class 12. The qualifiers to the second round would include the following:

  • At International Level: Top 5% of candidates, class-wise, who appear in the 1st level exam internationally.
  • At Zone/State Level: Top 25 rank holders from each zone and each class.
  • At School Level: Class topper, where at least 10 students from a class appear in the exam, and scores at least 50% qualifying marks.

Eligibility Criteria 2022

Students from SOF schools are eligible to apply for IMO. The schools must select any convenient exam day and register for it 30 days prior to the exam date. Students who are interested in taking the SOF IMO test can do so at their individual institutions. If the schools are unable to participate in the IMO exam, individual registrations are accepted. A minimum of 10 students from each school must register for the SOF IMO test, which is required.

  • The Level 1 IMO examinations paper is for students in grades 1 to 12 who want to evaluate their academic achievement in Mathematics.
  • The IMO test is divided into two levels: Level 1 and Level 2.

Level 1 IMO Exam Eligibility Criteria

Regardless of academic performance, all students in grades 1 to 12 are entitled to take the Level 1 IMO test. The modest eligibility conditions for the level 1 IMO examinations paper contribute to a higher level of engagement among students all around the world. Students in grades 1 to 12 who are pursuing school in the nation or abroad are able to apply for the IMO level 1 test.

Level 2 IMO Exam Eligibility Criteria

Students in Classes 3 to 12 take the IMO Level 2 examinations. Students in these classes who scored at least a B on the Level 1 IMO test paper are then considered for the Level 2 exam. The following is the requirement for students who want to take the level 2 IMO test paper. The Level 2 IMO test is open to the top 25 students in each class and zone.

Rank holders from each participating institution, with a minimum of 10 students from each class taking the exam and scoring 50% or above.
